The Diabetes Association of Zanzibar (DAZ) is a non-governmental, non-political, and non-profit voluntary organization established in 1986. Currently, with over 1000 members, DAZ acknowledges the need to update our membership database.
Diabetes rates in Zanzibar are increasing due to lifestyle changes such as rising obesity, physical inactivity, tobacco use, unhealthy diets, excessive alcohol consumption, and environmental factors. Type 1 Diabetes remains a growing concern alongside the rising prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes.
DAZ has a longstanding collaboration with the Tanzania Ministry of Health through the NCD Unit to prevent and manage diabetes. We educate the community about diabetes risk factors, symptoms, early prevention, and effective management strategies. This partnership has facilitated the creation of exercise groups aimed at reducing sedentary lifestyles and promoting physical activity, critical factors in managing diabetes risk in Zanzibar.
We take pride in our weekly community services, offering blood sugar screenings to individuals with Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes who lack access to glucometers and essential supplies. We also conduct screenings for other diabetes-related risk factors, including high blood pressure and elevated BMI, to identify and support those at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.
Our Mission
To prevent and control diabetes and its associated risk factors, while enhancing the quality of life for all individuals impacted by diabetes and its complications in Zanzibar.
Our Vision
A healthier Zanzibar through effective diabetes prevention, management, and understanding.
We achieve this by fostering community education, conducting proactive screenings, and forging strategic partnerships with health authorities to diminish the impact of diabetes across our communities.
Our Partners
We proudly collaborate with the Zanzibar Non-Communicable Disease Alliance and the International Diabetes Federation. Together, we strive to enhance healthcare initiatives and combat chronic diseases globally.
DAZ was officially registered in 2006 under Society Act No. 6 of 1995 with registration No. 446 dated 16/11/2006. Our organization was re-registered in 2020 with registration number Z0000068799.
